Choosing the Right Exhaust Setup

If you’ve made it here, then you’re someone who’s considering upgrading the stock exhaust system on your car to an aftermarket, custom or performance exhaust system. Before you begin shopping for an exhaust system there are a few factors to consider, such as: budget, sound, and style. Like any aftermarket auto accessory there are a ton of options in every category, so narrowing down what you like best in each is the easiest way to find a solution that meets what you’re looking for. Of course, you’ll also have to take into consideration that not every performance exhaust system is designed for every car make and model, so you’ll need to do a little homework on what’s the best choice for your car. If you stop by our muffler shop in Davie we’ll gladly give you our professional recommendations.

You’re probably already aware that stock exhaust systems are designed quickly and cheaply by auto manufacturers, so installing a custom exhaust comes with several benefits, among them being improved fuel efficiency and a better sounding car. But just because you’re going from stock to custom doesn’t mean you’re going to have the same setup as the other guy with a custom exhaust installed. As we discussed, there are a hundred or more options in terms of style, sound, and price. Exhaust systems also differ in the type of steel they’re made with, how pipe bends are formed, diameter of pipes, and configuration of pipes.

Let’s start with the basics. There are three main types of exhaust systems: axle-back exhaust systems, cat-back exhaust systems, and header-back exhaust systems. Each of these exhaust systems can be configured with a single, dual, or dual crossover exit. Basically, the type of exhaust system you choose determines what components you are going to be replacing and what kind of look and sound you’re going to get. It also determines how gases are going to flow. Another important aspect to consider is the use of a performance exhaust with mandrel bends instead of crush bends. Mandrel bends are regarded as superior in the exhaust system industry, since they’re smoother and do not restrict air flow. Practically all reputable aftermarket exhaust manufacturers utilize mandrel bending.
